Rebuilding Stronger

Out of Devastation Comes Opportunity
Hurricane Melissa dealt a devastating blow to Jamaica’s agricultural sector, causing over $29.5 billion in losses. At CB Group, we experienced the complete destruction of our Chippenham Egg operations. As we rebuild, we are not returning to the past. We are building smarter, stronger, and more resilient.

To modernise and revolutionise not only the table egg industry, but also the pork industry, CB Group is leveraging the proven post-Gilbert blueprint that transformed Jamaica’s broiler industry after Hurricane Gilbert 40 years ago.

The Post-Gilbert Blueprint

Following Hurricane Gilbert’s total devastation of the broiler industry, CB Group chose to rebuild smarter by introducing modern, climate-smart, tunnel-ventilation technology to the Caribbean through its Contract Growing model. This single decision would become pivotal in shaping the industry’s transformation.

Today, the broiler industry is the largest producer in CARICOM and the most sustainable agricultural livestock industry in the region.

Testimonials

Jheanette Bartley and Meneisha Grossett
CBG Contract Growers, Golden Oak Farms

I was in the retail industry for many years as a manager, but I wanted something to call my own. I did the application to CB Group and here we are. Just a couple years after starting, we’re already expanding. My granddaughter is going to come and run the farm one day – she loves it! – Jheanette

In 2021 I was diagnosed with leukaemia. After I got my health on track, I did some introspection and decided I wanted to pursue my own dream, and that was farming. It just so happened that around that time, my mother was also looking into farming and I was totally unaware. Therewas no fear in transitioning from the construction industry into farming. I’m doing what I love so I don’t work a day in my life. I call my Technical Field Officers (TFOs) morning, noon and night – midnight - and someone is always there to pick up the phone and help. Before my first placement [of baby chicks], I remember someone asked me how comfortable I was, and I told them, ‘I am 50% comfortable in my own knowledge but 100% comfortable that if I don’t know, I know who to call.’ – Meneisha

Andrew 'Nazir' Mattrasingh
CBG Contract Grower, Mattrasignh Farm

"I had just returned to Jamaica and wanted to play a role in the development of my country. CB gave me that opportunity. A friend told me that CB was introducing the most modern chicken houses to the country and I said ‘Yes, I’m interested!’. I was one of the first 14 farmers to have been HACCP, GMP, ISO certified to export chickens abroad.

CB is a cutting-edge company. Any time they see anything new, they bring it to the farmers. CB is playing a very big role to bring sustainable farming, and I am a proud CB Chicken Farmer"

Aidon Chin
CBG Contract Grower, Chin’s Poultry Farm

"My father started this farm in 1991 on a much smaller scale, and we’ve grown over the years. He always believed in succession, so I understand the value of building something that lasts for generations. This farm, other than CB’s Hill Run Farm, is the only other farm that has all solid sidewall houses.

The relationship between us and CB has been excellent over the years. We are like a big family, good friends, and work together through thick and thin.

We understand how fluid this industry is and have always maintained a good solid relationship. I know it will continue for years to come."

Harry Gentles
CBG Contract Grower, Haranjen Farms

"It’s been 3 decades. I returned to Jamaica interested in starting my own business. I was eventually introduced me to Mr. Eaton Barret, and the rest is history. Over the years I was mentored and developed a love for the industry and CB.

CB helped me to get a grant from the DBJ for water treatment, which gives us the best water quality, and a windrower for better litter management.

The most rewarding part of being a CB farmer is going to the supermarket and seeing the chicken in the fridge, because it could be coming from my farm. Big thanks to CB."

Leon & Valerie Blackwood
CBG Contract Growers, Blackwood Farms

"We’ve been Contract Growers for 40 years and we’ll continue doing it forever. After Hurricane Gilbert, when the poultry industry was almost wiped out, CB introduced new tunnel housing, and we were selected as a Contract Grower.

CB has made a significant contribution to our lives. It took us out of poverty, allowed us to become financially stable and give our children education. Our son now has his own farm. We take pride in reducing unemployment and contributing to food security. It’s great to know we’re helping feed and develop Jamaica."

Marsha White
CBG Contract Grower, White DADDOM Farm

"I’ve been a CBG Contract Grower for three years and we have just expanded from two houses to four."

This was originally my husband’s dream. He always wanted to own and operate a farm, while I had a career in Finance. He unfortunately passed away three years ago, just before our first baby chick placement. I decided to honour his dream, and over time, it has evolved into my dream as well.
We have five children, three boys and two girls, and I always tell them that this business is our baby. This farm belongs to them, and they are very involved in learning the business from the ground up. I am proud of the work that we put into building this legacy for our children."

Contract growing is a very viable investment and a great income opportunity. I would recommend it to anyone interested in becoming involved.

Adrian Williams
CBG Contract Grower, Mutida Farms

"Although my background is in electrical engineering, I’ve always wanted to build something of my own, and this was the perfect opportunity. I want to create something meaningful for my retirement and build generational wealth for my family.

The use of technology is very important when running a sustainable operation. The farm runs on solar energy all day, every day, and we have back up battery systems that we run at nights. We intend to expand on it as the farm expands in the near future. Contract growing is a complex but straightforward process. CB provides the baby chicks, feed and veterinary care, while the growers focus solely on raising the chickens. Once they are fully grown, CB collects them and handles processing at The Nest. From my perspective, the process has been made simple for contract growers."
